The Stormcrows are the military arm of the Inquisition priesthood. Their purpose, originally, was as an army dedicated to Khanus, and trained to fight in his interests. Whilst still martial in nature, and still considered a force to be reckoned with, years of peace have ensured that the Stormcrows take on other roles. Generally, the Stormcrows take on the role of templars and paladins, protecting the churches of Rhutalath, and fighting for their religion. Another important task is the protection of their priests, the Inquisitors. As storm-troopers, they have dedicated their lives to the protection of their holy masters; it is rare that an Inquisitor Errant is not accompanied by at least five Stormcrows.

Although a holy group, not a part of the army, the Stormcrows serve their King, in his role as head of the church. In this capacity, they act as soldiers for him; those Stormcrows stationed in Kanora often take on the role of city-guards, patrolling the streets, keeping the peace, and protecting the King’s interests. However, first and foremost, they serve the church and the priests, and rarely get involved in mundane affairs.

The training of a Stormcrow is a long and hard task, and takes place in the same halls as where Inquisitors are trained. From the beginnig, five trainees are often assigned to a trainee Inquisitor, thus creating a bond between them. The Stormcrows’ training is a mixture of fervent religious studying, and rigorous physical training. In the early years, Stormcrows are subjected to all kinds of torture, mental and physical, in order to ensure they become hardened warriors. Whilst not as inhumane as the fey-stalker training, and voluntary, it is nevertheless gruelling. Torture, pain, sleep deprivation and near-starvation are just some of the trials.

When qualified, a Stormcrow swears a vow to the church and the priesthood, to give his life should it be warranted. Most Stormcrows operate as escorts for specific Inquisitors, taking temple duties when not needed. A few dedicate themselves to the King, serving as his city watch, though most of the time this role is given as a punishment.

Stormcrows generally operate in groups of five (known as a Cadre), usually one of whom is a Captain. Higher ranks often control more than one Cadre, and protect particularly important Inquisitors, or temples. Storm crows wear black plate armour, and dark capes, with a white eagle-dagger (the Vinran) emblazoned on their breast. They also wear a black helmet, in the shape of a birds head.
